Ultralight Hammocks: The Perfect Balance of Comfort and Portability

If you're an outdoor enthusiast, backpacker, or camper, an ultralight hammock is worth a look. It packs small, hangs between two trees and can stand in for a tent on a dry night.

Whether you're looking for a free standing hammock for home use or need essential hammock accessories to enhance your outdoor experience, this guide will help you put together a hammock setup that suits you.

Why Choose an Ultralight Hammock Over a Tent?

Traditional tents may provide shelter, but they come with extra weight, complex setup, and uneven ground issues. An ultralight hammock is a compact, easy-to-carry alternative that gets you off the ground.

1. Lightweight and Travel-Friendly
A camping hammock folds into a small pouch that can be attached to a backpack, which suits hikers, campers and long-distance trekkers.

2. Simple Setup
Unlike tents that need poles, stakes and a flat surface, an ultralight hammock hangs from tree straps and carabiners. If you prefer a tree-free option, pairing it with a free standing hammock stand allows you to set up anywhere.

3. Off the Ground
Lying above the ground keeps you off rocks and wet ground. Add a mosquito net and a rain fly for insects and rain.

4. Warm and Cool Nights
Air moves under a hammock, so it can feel cool. On cold nights, campers add an underquilt or a sleeping pad.

How to Choose the Best Ultralight Hammock

Selecting the right ultralight hammock depends on your needs, weight capacity, and preferred use. Consider these factors when making your purchase:

1. Fabric and Strength
Camping hammocks are usually made from ripstop nylon or parachute fabric. Check the listing for:
✔ The fabric
✔ The packed size
✔ The weight rating (our Hammock for Camping lists 500 lb, or 226.8 kg)

2. Suspension System
Look for wide tree straps, carabiners and plenty of loops so you can set the height. A free standing hammock stand is the answer if there are no trees.

3. Size and Weight Capacity
Single hammocks suit one person
Double hammocks give one person room to lie across, and some are listed for two people

4. Weather Resistance
For wet or buggy nights, pair your ultralight hammock with:
✔ A rain tarp over the top
✔ A mosquito net around you
✔ An underquilt in colder weather

The Best Hammock Accessories for Outdoor Comfort

These are the accessories campers most often add to an ultralight hammock.

1. Tree Straps and Carabiners
Wide tree straps with several loop points let you set the height, and they are kinder to bark than rope.

2. Mosquito Net and Rain Tarp
For insects and rain, add a zippered mosquito net and a rain fly.

3. Hammock Pillow and Underquilt
A hammock pillow is something to rest your head on, and an underquilt adds a layer under you on cold nights.

4. Free Standing Hammock Stand
If trees aren’t available, a free standing hammock stand allows you to set up your hammock anywhere, whether on a beach, patio, or indoors.

Where to Use an Ultralight Hammock

You can use an ultralight hammock in lots of places:

1. National Parks and Hiking Trails
An ultralight hammock suits multi-day hikes where every bit of weight counts.

2. Beach and Lakeside Camping
Pairing your hammock with a free standing hammock stand allows you to relax by the water without needing trees.

3. Backyard and Patio Use
For home relaxation, a free standing hammock can be placed on a deck, patio, or balcony, as a place to sit or lie down.

4. Festivals and Outdoor Events
An ultralight hammock packs into the car for music festivals, parks and road trips.

How to Care for Your Ultralight Hammock

To look after your ultralight hammock, follow these care tips:

✔ Shake off debris and dirt after each use
✔ Wash with mild soap and air dry to maintain fabric integrity
✔ Store in a breathable bag to prevent moisture buildup
✔ Check straps and carabiners for wear and tear regularly

Putting Your Setup Together

Whether you are a backpacker, a camper or you just like lounging outdoors, an ultralight hammock packs small and hangs from two trees. Pair it with tree straps, a rain tarp and an underquilt, or use a free standing hammock stand where there are no trees.

Browse the range above, or email us if you are not sure which hammock suits your trip.

Frequently asked questions

CAN ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCKS BE USED FOR YOGA AND STRETCHING?

No. Our hammocks are made for sitting and lying, not aerial yoga. Do not use them for yoga, acrobatics or hanging exercises.

WHAT HAMMOCK ACCESSORIES HELP WITH STORAGE?

Our Hanging Organiser is a 10 foot (3 m) nylon strap with 19 loops and 8 carabiner hooks for hanging gear near your hammock. Its listed load capacity is 150 pounds.

HOW LONG DO FREE STANDING HAMMOCKS LAST?

That depends on use, weather and care, so we do not give a number of years. Keep the frame dry, cover or store it when you are not using it, and check the fixings now and then.

CAN ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCKS BE USED IN NATIONAL PARKS?

Rules differ from park to park, so check with the park before you hang a hammock. Where hammocks are allowed, wide straps are kinder to trees than rope.

IS THERE A PILLOW MADE FOR HAMMOCKS?

Yes. Our Hammock Pillow is inflatable, with a thickened TPU bladder, a removable washable cover and a detachable elastic strap to hold it in place.

ARE FREE STANDING HAMMOCKS WEATHERPROOF?

We do not describe any free standing hammock as weatherproof. Frames and fabrics wear in sun and rain. Cover the stand or bring it inside when it is not in use, and dry it after rain.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PACK UP AN ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCK?

It depends on practice. A camping hammock rolls or stuffs into its bag fairly quickly once you are used to it, so we do not quote a time.

WHAT HAMMOCK ACCESSORIES MAKE TRAVEL EASIER?

Keep it simple: a stuff sack, straps and carabiners. Our Hammock Insect Net comes with a stuff sack, and our Hammock Rain Fly comes with a carry pouch.

CAN A FREE STANDING HAMMOCK BE USED ON A BALCONY?

It can, if the balcony has room for the full length of the frame plus space to get in and out. Measure first: our Portable Hammock and Stand measures 3.27 x 1.06 m (10.7 x 3.5 feet). Check your building's rules too.

WHAT HAMMOCK ACCESSORIES CAN HELP SECURE A HAMMOCK IN WINDY CONDITIONS?

In strong wind it is safer not to hang a hammock at all. In a light breeze, guy lines on a rain fly stop it flapping. Our Hammock Insect Net comes with four ground pegs.

HOW MUCH SPACE DOES A FREE STANDING HAMMOCK REQUIRE?

Measure the frame on the product page and add room to get in and out. Our Portable Hammock and Stand measures 3.27 x 1.06 m (10.7 x 3.5 feet). Where a listing does not publish a footprint, email us and we will find it.

ARE ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCKS SUITABLE FOR HOT WEATHER?

Thin nylon hammocks often feel cooler than lying on the ground or in a closed tent, because air moves around you. Our camping hammocks use 210T parachute nylon.

WHAT HAMMOCK ACCESSORIES HELP WITH RAIN PROTECTION?

A rain fly over the hammock. Our Hammock Rain Fly is 11 x 9 feet (3.35 x 2.74 m), listed as waterproof, and comes with a carry pouch. Pitch it low and tight in heavy rain.

HOW EASY IS IT TO ASSEMBLE A FREE STANDING HAMMOCK?

Follow the steps for your model and check every joint is tight. We do not promise tool-free or quick assembly. Check what is included on the product page, and email us if you get stuck.

CAN ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCKS REPLACE A TENT FOR CAMPING?

Some campers use a hammock instead of a tent where there are trees. You still need shelter from rain and bugs, such as a rain fly and an insect net. Our Hammock with Insect Net includes both.

WHAT HAMMOCK ACCESSORIES ADD COMFORT?

A pillow is the simplest add-on. Our Hammock Pillow is inflatable with a removable, washable cover. We do not sell cup holders, cushions or sunshades.

ARE FREE STANDING HAMMOCKS SAFE FOR KIDS AND PETS?

We do not sell any hammock as safe for children or pets. Children should only use a hammock with an adult watching, and pets should be kept off it. Stay within the listed weight limit.

DO ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCKS COME WITH BUILT-IN BUG NETS?

Some do. Our Hammock with Insect Net comes with a net, a rain fly tarp and a ridgeline. For other hammocks, the Hammock Insect Net is sold on its own and is listed to fit most 11 foot (3.35 m) hammocks.

WHAT HAMMOCK ACCESSORIES HELP PREVENT BUGS?

A full insect net is the main one. Our Hammock Insect Net is 144 x 72 inches, with a water-resistant bathtub floor, four ground pegs and a stuff sack. It weighs 2 pounds.

HOW DURABLE ARE FREE STANDING HAMMOCKS FOR OUTDOOR USE?

That depends on the frame, the weather and care. We do not claim any stand can handle all weather. Cover it or store it inside when not in use, and check for rust and loose fixings.

CAN ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCKS BE USED FOR LONG-TERM CAMPING?

Many people use camping hammocks on longer trips. Pack a rain fly and an insect net, and check straps and carabiners each day. The Hammock for Camping has a listed capacity of 500 lb (226.8 kg).

WHAT ARE THE BEST HAMMOCK ACCESSORIES FOR WINTER CAMPING?

Cold air under a hammock cools you fast, so winter use needs insulation underneath, such as an underquilt or a sleeping pad. We do not sell those. Our Hammock Rain Fly can help keep off wind and rain.

HOW PORTABLE ARE FREE STANDING HAMMOCKS FOR TRAVEL?

Our Portable Hammock and Stand is made to be moved, but it is still a full-size frame, so check its 3.27 x 1.06 m (10.7 x 3.5 feet) size against your car and your space.

WHAT MAKES ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCKS DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR HAMMOCKS?

Ultralight hammocks use thin parachute nylon, so they weigh little and pack small. Hammocks with spreader bars or stands are heavier and made to stay in one place.

WHAT HAMMOCK ACCESSORIES HELP WITH QUICK SETUP?

Wide straps with several loops and a pair of carabiners make hanging simpler. Our Hammock for Camping comes with 10 foot straps with 18+1 loops and alloy steel carabiners. We do not quote a setup time.

CAN FREE STANDING HAMMOCKS BE USED INDOORS?

Yes, if you have the floor space. Measure the frame and allow room to get in and out. A stand needs no ceiling or wall fixing.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCKS SUPPORT?

It varies, so check the listing. Our Hammock for Camping has a listed capacity of 500 lb (226.8 kg). The Hammock with Insect Net listing does not publish a figure, so ask us before you order.

WHAT HAMMOCK ACCESSORIES DO I NEED FOR CAMPING?

Straps and carabiners to hang it, an insect net where there are bugs, and a rain fly for wet weather. A pillow is a nice extra. We sell the net, the rain fly and the pillow separately.

HOW STABLE ARE FREE STANDING HAMMOCKS COMPARED TO TREE-HUNG HAMMOCKS?

A stand lets you hang a hammock where there are no trees, on firm, level ground. Healthy trees with tight straps can be just as steady. Either way, check the setup before use.

WHY DO HIKERS USE ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCKS?

They weigh little and pack small, so they suit hikers who carry everything. Our listings do not give a packed weight for every model, so ask us if you need a figure.
